One of the new activities of the National Park and Protected Landscape Area Šumava is a network of emergency shelters along the so-called backbone, red-marked hiking trails across the Šumava. The length of the route between Železná Ruda and Zvonkovna is 103 km. From the 1st August 2008 there is a total of six of these: Hůrka u Prášil, Poledník, Modrava, Bučina, Strážný and Nové Údolí. The emergency shelters offer assistance to hikers with rucksacks who pass across the Šumava backbone route, following the state border. Defined limited space is designed for legal emergency overnight accommodation in Šumava National Park. Conditions for sleeping therein are set out in rules.
"Stay overnight and get away"
Standing regulations for the shelters
• Place of use for one night only
• No fires allowed
• All waste to be taken with you
• Keep the peace
• Open all year from 18.00 to 9.00 o’clock
